SUMMARY:Archaeometric Research in Iran and its Neighbouring Regions: Recent Activities and Future Perspective | Part 2 Pyrotechnology and Ceramic Production
DESCRIPTION:(7:30 – 9:00 pm Iranian Time) \nOnline-Series \nWe kindly invite you to our second session of our monthly online-series ‘Archaeometric Research in Iran and Neighbouring Regions’ with lectures from and discussions among experts. \nThis month’s topic is on: Pyrotechnology and Ceramic Production in Iran and its Neighbouring Regions \n  \n*Kinetics or Thermodynamics: How to Understand the Production Process of Artificial Millstones* \nDr. Moslem Mishmastnehi\, University of Bamberg\, Germany \n  \n*Grey Pottery in Northern and Northeastern Iranian Plateau* \nDr. Moein Elami\, Goethe University Frankfurt\, Germany \n  \nInvited Experts (Discussion Panel): \nProf. Dr. Giuseppe Cultrone\, Facultad de Ciencias\, Universidad de Granada \nProf. Dr. Julian Henderson\, Department of classics and archaeology\, University of Nottingham \n  \nPlease register and obtain your link for this workshop session \nhttps://ruhr-uni-bochum.zoom.us/meeting/register/u5AldeGgqDotGNBPbriNcMz6iVgEzkRQjbHU \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. \n  \nGeneral Information on this online workshop series: \nAccording to archaeological studies\, the Iranian Plateau can be considered as an important region in the ancient Near East. Furthermore\, the study of archaeological materials from the Iranian Plateau using cutting edge technology has brought new insight during the last decades. Archaeometric studies identified significant characteristics in the relationship between human and nature for a wide range of periods of the Iranian Plateau’s history. However\, many archaeological questions concerning\, for example\, life\, trade and technology still need to be answered using different kinds of methods and tools. \nDuring each session we will present two lectures with focus on one specific topic on Iran and its neighbouring regions discussed via archaeometric studies and followed by a discussion that is chaired by two to three invited experts. Topics include archaeometallurgy\, ceramic analysis\, stone and natural inorganic materials\, building material and masonry\, pigments\, organic materials and bioarchaeology\, just to mention a few; each session will last approximately 60 – 90 min. \nThe aim of this online series is to exhibit an overview of archaeometric research performed on Iranian cultural materials and in relation to neighbouring regions. We intend to not only discuss the results but also to identify advantages\, problems and new potentials in the study of ancient material culture. In summary\, we aim to develop a forum for the discourse on archaeometric studies and its future in Iran and the neighbouring regions among researchers. \nThe online-series is established and performed within the SPP-DFG 2176 programme: ‘The Iranian Highlands: Resiliences and Integration of Premodern Societies’. We also welcome interested scholars to participate presenting a lecture. If you are interested\, please contact Sepideh Jamshidi Yeganeh (see below). \nOrganisers \nDr. Omid Oudbashi\, Art University of Isfahan (Coordinator) in collaboration with the \nGerman Archaeological Institute \nRuhr-Universität Bochum \nDeutsches Bergbau-Museum Bochum \nFreie Universität Berlin \nExecutive Committee \nDr. Kristina A. SUMMARY:Trade and Trading Networks as Cultural Resources in Southeastern Iran
DESCRIPTION:The particular objective of this workshop is to shed light on trade as a resource in the provinces of Kerman\, Hormozgan Sistan and Baluchestan and Southern Khorasan through different periods of time. Based on case studies\, we will pinpoint how trade has affected the region in the past and how it shapes the life of its population today. \nQuestions to be tackled are: \n\nUnder which conditions can trade be considered to become a resource?\nWhich were the main routes connecting the inland with the coastal regions?\nHow is value attributed to certain resources and what is the role of trading networks in this regard?\nHow significant is local knowledge for trade relations past and present?

SUMMARY:Coming to terms with the future: concepts of "resilience" for the study of premodern societies
DESCRIPTION:A starting assumption of the SPP 2176 is that the premodern societies of the Iranian highlands were flexible and dynamic\, forming ever new social and cultural configurations. The thesis is that this flexibility is specific for these highland societies and resulted from the interaction between starkly changing external conditions and deeply anchored cultural mechanisms for coping with crises of various kinds. The workshop is intended as an approach to a key question of SPP 2176\, asking how strategies of resiliency developed in different “highlandscapes” of Iran in terms of economic\, linguistic and social patterns and the strength of political-social integration specific to different time periods. \nPROGRAMM \n05 December 2020 \n\n\n\n09:00 (MEZ)\nLog in\n\n\n09:15–09:30\nWelcome and Introduction\nSusan Pollock\, Reinhard Bernbeck\, Gisela Eberhardt\n\n\nTEMPORALITY OF CRISES\n\n\n09:30–09:45\nPalaeoenvironmental Change and Resilience of Dryland Ecosystems \nMartin Kehl\, Babak Rafiei-Alavi\, Hamid Alizadeh-Lahijani\n\n\n09:45–10:00\nInterdisciplinary Approaches to the Study of Resilience in the High Mountains of the Southern Zagros: Potential\, Challenges and Limitations \nAndrea Ricci\, Silvia Balatti\, Ahmad Azadi\, Elodie Brisset\, Morteza Djamali\, Majid Naderi\n\n\n10:00–10:30\nDiscussion\n\n\n10:30–11:00\nCoffee Break\n\n\nRISK MANAGEMENT\n\n\n11:00–11:15\nAdaptability and Resilience of the Late Pleistocene Hunter-Gatherers in the Zagros Highlands: The Case of Khar Cave \nSonia Shidrang\, Fereidoun Biglari\n\n\n11:15–11:30\nReaching the Breaking Point?
